Culture and historical heritage

This church, which is also known as “The Birth of Our Lady”, is located 10 km from the city of Gjakova. It is a monument with cultural and historical values as one of the oldest churches in the municipality of Gjakova.
According to history, after the murder of Father Luigj Palaj and fifty other Albanians, in 1913 in Janosh of Dushkaja by the Montenegrin forces regarding the resistance of the local population to convert to the Orthodox religion, the Austro-Hungary asked Montenegro as compensation the construction of three churches, that in Bec, Novosella and Gllogjan. The Church of Beci was built in three years by the Austrians together with the villagers of Bec village during years 1916-1918, while the plot of land was donated by the Delikola family of Beci.
The first parish priest of this church was Don Gjon Bisaku, who together with Don Shtjefen Kurti, the parish priest of Novosella and Don Luigj Gashi, the parish priest of Smaqit-Bishtazhin, are known for the Memorandum sent to the League of Nations, in Geneva, informing on the pressure and violence used from neighboring countries on the Albanian population in Kosovo at that time.
