The Grand Bazaar
Culture and historical heritageThe Old Bazaar of Gjakova, also known as the Great Bazaar, is one of the most important monuments of cultural heritage in Kosovo and the historical center of the city. It is considered one of the oldest and largest bazaars in the Balkans, once serving as the main point of trade and handicrafts in the region.
The Grand Bazaar was built in 1594/1595, when Gjakova gained the status of a city. It is characterized by traditional houses with wooden construction, cobbled streets and small shops that preserve the authentic oriental style.
With an area of about 35,000 m², it was home to hundreds of crafts, which were engaged in the processing of wood, metal, textile, leather, equipment for horses, hats, copper vessels, etc.
From an urban point of view, the bazaar represents a living example of the oriental urban plan with rich architectural elements.
