Rana e Hedhun (The Thrown Sand)

Nature and landscapes

Rana e Hedhun includes a very specific formation of dunes, the only ones on the Adriatic coast containing scientific, didactic and touristic values.
This formation, which is located about 4.5 km northwest of the city of Shengjin and 9.3 km southeast of the village of Velipoja, is part of the Gulf of Drin, which includes a rich natural ensemble that stretches for 60 km from Cape Skenderbeu in the south to the discharge of the Buna River in the north.
Rana e Hedhun stretches entirely on the western slopes of Rrenci Mountain, where the highest point, Maja e Zeze (Black Peak), reaches the quota of 545.4 m above sea level.
Rana e Hedhun is formed from the action of the wind on the face of the rocky mountain creating sand dunes, which are up to about 50-100 meters high, 100 meters wide and up to 600 meters long.
In 2002, an area of six hectares around the dune was declared a natural monument.
