The Kune-Vain Managed Nature Reserve
Nature and landscapesThe Kune-Vain Managed Nature Reserve represents one of the most important natural heritage sites in Albania, as well as the first area declared protected at the national level since July 1940. This status of a protected hunting reserve testifies to the early institutional assessment of the natural and faunistic assets that characterize this territory, placing it in a special historical and environmental context within the development of nature protection policies in Albania.
Positioned between the city of Shengjin and the area of Tale, this reserve expands in a territory formed mainly from the geomorphological processes of the mouth of the Drini River, one of the most dynamic hydrographic systems in the country. In this sense, its formation and evolution are closely related to alluvial deposits and the continuous interaction between fresh and marine waters of the Adriatic, creating a complex mosaic of ecosystems with high ecological values.
The Kune-Vain natural complex is characterized by a rich and harmonious combination of different natural environments, which include marine, lagoon, swampy, forest and meadow habitats. This variety of habitats creates optimal conditions for the development of a high biodiversity, which make this area one of the most important ecological points on the Albanian coast. In particular, the lagoon system, as an essential part of this complex, offers favorable conditions for the reproduction and nutrition of a wide range of aquatic and terrestrial organisms.
The lagoon region of Kune-Vain includes a number of lagoons of different sizes and characteristics, such as: Kune Lagoon (10 km²), Merxhan Lagoon (2.5 km²), Knalla Lagoon (2.2 km²), Ceka Lagoon (2.2 km²) and Vain Lagoon (14.5 km²), as well as the lower delta of the Drin river in the territory of Lezha.
From an ecological point of view, the reserve represents an extraordinary importance for the preservation of biodiversity, including over 360 species of animals, among which about 190 species are included in the Red List of fauna of Albania. This faunistic wealth includes a wide range of fish, water and landfowl, as well as mammals, making this area a key habitat for many migratory and resident species. In particular, the lagoons and marshes of this system constitute important stations for migratory birds along the Mediterranean migratory corridors. Administratively and legally, the area has evolved from a hunting reserve to a “Managed Nature Reserve”.
Managed Natural Kune-Vain is one of Albania's most valuable natural assets, not only for its ecological complexity and rich biodiversity, but also for its importance in scientific studies, environmental education and the development of sustainable tourism. A visit to this area offers the opportunity to closely observe the interweaving of ecosystems and experience one of the most special natural landscapes of the Albanian coast.
